U.S. Data Center Ecosystem Tracker

A UVA National Security Institute (NSI) project in partnership with the Special Competitive Studies Project (SCSP)

September 30, 2026

AI competition with China is a national security priority, and U.S. leadership depends on physical infrastructure. The material constraints behind its expansion are not always easy to see.

The UVA National Security Institute’s (NSI) U.S. Data Center Ecosystem Tracker brings this infrastructure into view, mapping data centers and exploring their relationships to energy, water, land-use policy, and other considerations. Its interactive interface lets users examine facility data alongside legislation and policy, offering a high-level view of the infrastructure ecosystem and the conditions that may shape its development.

Designed to be a living and customizable tool, the U.S. Data Center Ecosystem Tracker can evolve with feedback from researchers, community organizers, and others working to understand these impacts. The project will also provide a foundation for future comparative analysis of U.S. and Chinese capabilities as that work develops.

Dashboard Views

U.S. Facility Dashboard

Map of the U.S. with multi-colored points related to data center infrastructure spread across it

The U.S. facility dashboard provides an overview of individual data center facilities across the country. Filter by facility characteristics, then switch map themes to explore project status, capacity, power, water, policy, or opposition context. Click a point to see its facility details. This view is helpful for investigating where facilities are being built and what information is reported about them.

U.S. Hexagon Spatial Explorer

Map of the U.S. populate with blue hexagons that represent data center infrastructure

The U.S. hexagon spatial explorer aggregates data into 50km equal-area hexagons, making it easier to compare patterns across regions. Choose an outcome and a comparison variable which can then be displayed alone or as a bivariate map of both. Filters change which facilities contribute to the data center measures. Click a hexagon to inspect its values and neighbors.

Virginia County Explorer

The Virginia county explorer provides a more detailed comparison across Virginia’s 133 counties and independent cities. Choose an outcome and comparison variable, then map either measure or both together; optionally show facility points or select a geography for its details.
